Samhain Info and Correspondences


Sabbath of Samhain: The Wilting Rose has become the Rose Hip and is preparing to put her energies into her roots reading for the darker months.


Samhain for many is a most is a time of Endings and Beginnings. And thus is considered to be the Witches New Year by Witches. It is a time of potent Ancestral Connection and honouring of those passed beyond the Veil - if you don't work with Ancestors all year already you may choose time to welcome to connect their Wisdom and Guidance.

The word Samhain means - “Summer's End" and is the last fire festival of the year that heralds the end of the harvest and the start of the colder darker months.


Originally a Celtic festival Samhain has many names:


Calan Gaeaf, Calan Gwaf, Kala-Goanv, or Nos Galan Gaeof.

The Welsh, call it Nos Cyn Calan Gaual or Oie Houney.


In the Medieval Yellow Book of Lecan, it is listed as "Feast of Mongfind," the legendary Witch-Queen who married a King of Tara in old Ireland.


Samhain is a time of banishing and release in order to journey lighter into the darker months, as choose what you wish to take through Winter with you, only that which is important and leave the remnants of the fading year behind. After this release, it is time to celebrate all that has been achieved, all that we are grateful for, including the harvest bounty.


Samhain is also then a time of honouring the Shadows of Self through inward journeying, it is a time of going deep within to process all that has been experienced thus far. To heal and accept, so allow lots of quiet reflective time - spent in meditation to help you with this. Hold space for all emotions, thoughts and visions that occur and journal them for future records.

If you don’t have one already one, you may wish to set up an Ancestor Altar to commemorate those you are connected to, if you don’t have a lineage as such or know much about your personal family, honour those that have influenced you even if you didn’t personally know them. The great Witches, Teachers, Mentors and Practitioners of Magick that have passed before us are still very much part of the line of Magick that influences who we are and who we are able to be today. Many choose to hold a "Dumb Supper" at this time to feast with those passed beyond and set a place at the table for them.


Scrying is also a good way to connect now and to gain access to important messages from: Higher Self, Guides, Deity, Ancestors, Loved Ones Passed, Elementals, Spirits.


You may choose to Scry with: Water, Wax, Black Mirror, Ink, Oil, Black Glass or polished stone such as obsidian - jet, Fire. There are many many forms of Scrying.


Make sure you honour the Traditional Custodians of the land where you chose to work your Magick also and thank them for their acceptance of your practices upon sacred land and their guidance and protection of the land herself.


Samhain Deity Connections:


Darker deities are symbolic of transformation and rebirth... death as change. These maybe the Chthonic Ones - Psychopomps, deities of the Underworld, Destruction and Resurrection.


Correspondences:


Symbols: Pomegranate, Wheat, Harvest Fruits, Fallen Leaves, Snakeskin, Bones, Black Mirrors, Cobwebs, Ravens, Fire.

Colours: Black, Dark Red, Brown, Orange, Gold.

Botanicals: Mugwort, Asphodel, Mint, Parsley, Dark Roses, Wilted Roses, Allspice, Cinnamon, Yew, Cedar, Pine, Mullein, Rue, Calendula, Marigold, Sage.

Foods: Grains, Berries, Root Veggies, Pumpkin, Sweet Potato, Apple, Mead, Spiced Wine, Dark Ale, Pomegranate.

Stone: Amber, Garnet, Agate, Obsidiain, Black Tourmaline, Pyrite, Minerals: Copper, Gold and Brass. Bones.

Some Chthonic Deities and Psychopomps such as Persephone, Hekate, Hades, Hermes, Thanatos, The Erinyes. Some from other Pantheons: Anubis, Osiris, Nephthys, Kali, The Morrigan, Ereshkigal, Yama, Hel, Mors,
