GODDESS NYX

NYX ART BY RICHARD HESCOX
NYX ART BY RICHARD HESCOX

Nyx was born of the primordial chaos that existed before creation coming into being with her brother Erebus (Darkness) she is the embodiment of the night, the dark veil that obscures the light (Aether) and the counterpart to Hemera (Day) who in turn disperses the night as together they create the dance of darkness and light.

She is the blessed darkness sprinkled with stars, and the cyclical Moon. Mother of the velvet void of unlimited potential, that births all.

Orphic Hym 2 - To Night - Nyx

Nyx, parent goddess, source of sweet repose, from whom at first both Gods and men arose,

Hear, blessed Kypris, decked with starry light, in sleep’s deep silence dwelling in ebon night!

Dreams and soft case attend your dusky train, pleased with the lengthened gloom and fearful strain.

Dissolving anxious care, the friend of Mirth, with darkling coursers riding round the earth.

Goddess of phantoms and of shadowy play, whose drowsy power divides the natural day:

By Fate’s decree you constantly send the light to deepest hell, remote from mortal sight

For dire Necessity which nothing withstands, invests the world with adamantine bands.

Be present, Goddess, to your suppliant’s prayer, desir’d by all, whom all alike revere,

Blessed, benevolent, with friendly aid dispell the fears of Twilight’s dreadful shade.

Note: Nyx primordial and ancient may be seen of darkness mother of the gods, Kypris is an epithet of Aphrodite meaning Lady of Cyprus, she also has another epithet Melanis meaning darkness.

Nyx has been part of my nightly connections for many years, supporting my dreaming, my trance journeys and chthonic meditations and has been a guide through many periods of deep grief and loss, most recently the loss of my mother a few months ago.

She is the power of the dark stillness, the healing void, the space of unlimited potential, she is the richness that supports regeneration through profound challenges. I have been in many deep dark places within my life, many I navigated completely alone in my youth, in my later magickal practices she has been a welcome guide.

Nyx is daughter of Chaos, Wife and Sister of Erebus (Darkness) and mother of many beings of darkness and light:

Aether (Light), Erebus (Darkness), Eris (Strife) Hemera (Day), Hypnos (sleep), Thanatos (Death), Moriai (Fates), Nemesis (Retribution), Moros (Doom), Geras (old age), Oizys (Misery), The Oneiroi (Dreams), Ker (Violent Death), Apate (Deceit), Philotes (Friendship), Hesperides (Nymphs), Erinyes (Furies), Eros (Love) and even Hekate.

Nyx is one of the liminal goddess in my upcoming Walking the Middle Road with the Half Moons online immersion, along with Nephthys, Hekate, Venus, Persephone and Medousa.
