Hekate - Ἑκάτη - interpreted often to mean the distant goddess or she who works from afar, is ancient liminal queen of thresholds, key bearing mistress of the crossroads and governess of Earth - Sky and Sea. She has become one of the most popular goddesses of modern times, though when I began working with her nearly 20 years ago it was not the case, I knew very few people who had even heard of her back then, well in my world at least. Her power as a remote goddess has ironically been brought into the light of modernity extending her popularity into the homes and hearts of devotees worldwide. And with the creation of her annual celebration Rite of Her Sacred Fires by Hekatean witch and scholar Sorita dÉste in 2010, Hekate is now celebrated in community on the May Full Moon by thousands of people around the world. You can find more about this celebration here: https://www.hekatecovenant.com/rite-of-her-sacred-fires

As we flow into the Year of the Fire Horse, Hekate's associations with fire are very potent and I have no doubt that this years Rite will be the most popular yet as she has both Fire and Horse associations. And very excitedly this year I will be in Greece in May, and I am also spending time in her sacred temple - Lagina; Türkiye in April, fulfilling a 20 year dream to undertake a pilgrimage to her ancient place of worship.
With her flaming torches Hekate is the Light in the Darkness, guide through the liminal spaces, she is the Universal Light - in her role as World Soul and she is the flame of the rose with her Fiery Rose connections. She is so often depicted with a torch in each hand or leading the way with a single torch, she is also seen with a circlet of light, breathing fire and emitting light with her celestial wisdom. Here are some of her Fire epithets (titles):
Aglaos - ‘Radiant’, Dadophoros - ‘Torchbearer', Liparokredemnos - ‘Of the Bright Headband’, Noctiluca - ‘Light of the Night’, Phôsphoros - ‘Light-bringer’, Pyriboulos - ‘Of fiery counsel’, Pyripnos - ‘Fire-breather’, Pyrophoros - ‘Fire-bearer’.
As a multi-layered goddess with many associations she has many epithets, you can find more of Hekate's titles here in this comprehensive list:
Hekate is often depicted as Triformas - in Triple form that in more modern times is seen by many as maiden, mother and crone though in older times relates to her 3 worlds and her ability to see into the Past, Present and Future. Originally a goddess of childbirth and liminal thresholds she has in more recent times also become a crone goddess of witchcraft and the Moon.
Her 3 faces are sometimes shown as a woman, at others she is theriocephalic - animal headed usually with the head of a Wolf, a Snake and a Horse. She is Potnia Theron - Mistress of Animals and also has associations with hounds, owls, bulls, lions and dragons.

Whilst Hekate has several horse epithets, Eurippa - Horse Finder, has long been resonant for me as someone who has a deep connection to horses and I always find them when I need them most and also horse riding and breeding has been part of my family ancestry for several generations, we have always been great finders of horses. And with that in mind I have chosen this epithet to honour her this year in two very special offerings:
She is one of the featured goddesses in my upcoming Walking the Middle Road Online Immersion and has her own dedicated live and she is also as a wisdom keeper in my Year of the Fire Horse live within the same container. You can find more info here, we begin on 26th January:
If you live in or near my region in the Northern Rivers, NSW, Australia I am offering an in-person full day Hekate Eurippa Year of the Fire Horse Immersion, info here:
If this resonates with you and Hekate is calling you, I would love to welcome you into circle either online or in-person or both, as we open to her wisdom and guidance through the tail end of the Serpent Year and into the Flames of Horse.
If you would like to read more there are other posts about Hekate on this blog.
Blessings,
